So yeah, I went ahead and did this: a collection of the complete (rather, incomplete) Bobu Leene comics. Not sure why anybody but me would want this thing, but there you have it--it's available from Lulu HERE. It collects issues 1-12 of Bobu Leene (which I think ran in '96-'97...the years get foggy) and then almost all of the Lone Killer strips, which came out in a single issue in (I think) '98.

Maybe one day I'll get to finish the Bobu Leene saga.

Then again...Pete Prochilohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11071453177683930557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-850640863529530550.post-8685017915441803792013-11-01T05:45:00.002-07:002013-11-01T05:47:16.840-07:00Lone Killer

"Lone Killer" was a concept that my man Rob Duffy and I kicked around in the late '90s. My usual roguish self ended up bogarting the idea, and I briefly drew a comic strip with the character as I envisioned it. There were only a handful of them; they ran a few times in "The Aquarian" magazine and I printed them in a single-issue comic book at some point, but they are all reprinted once again in the gigantic "Incomplete Bobu Leene" hardcover which I just put together. More info on that HERE.
When I first got into comics, it was the Mickey and Donald stuff of Gottfredson and Barks, reprinted via Gladstone comics, initially. Later, after I left these "childish" stories and got into superheroes, I traversed a route from Spider-Man through Batman to Wolverine, then left that genre somewhat and took in things like Cerebus. At the time I was doing Bobu Leene, I was trying, in my inevitably feeble way, to process the idea of the anti-hero; one of the themes of the book, that was not necessarily well developed on my part, was how does a bad guy try and make good on past misdeeds? In this case, Bobu Leene tries to set things straight by eliminating his former boss and crooked colleagues, but of course two wrongs do not make a right.

Over the course of the series, though, I was becoming disenchanted with superhero/action comics in general. In terms of my romance with art, in hindsight I realize that I intuitively elevated comic art to the same level as that of the grand master painters of old (your Michelangelo crowd), values I inherited from my dad, I guess (the Italians love their grand master painters and fumetti). So when I began to doubt the value of comic art, I began to question my commitment to the entire endeavor of art.

Anyways, just some 10 cent psychologizin'. Hope to add some more sketches down the line.
Here's cool image taken by Mark Berman of Middle Earth comics...it shows a copy of Bobu Leene #1 as well as some original art I did that would end up as an "ad" in one of the subsequent issues. The "ad" features Bobu Leene in a comic book store that looks suspiciously like Middle Earth.
Here's a cover for a story I wrote pretty recently, that I may eventually getting around to publishing on the Amazon Kindle. It's about a guy named Lupone who solves mysteries...your usual type of urban fantasy-mystery mix. It's been awhile, again. Just uploading a couple of sketches I did of a friend's sociopathic canine. One is him in his good moments; the other, his manic mode. A dear friend was doing the Web comic Devil Bill & Spenser a couple years back, and he is reposting them now at devilbillandspenser.blogspot.com. Yesterday I sketched him for her while we were drawing on her easel. Behold the terrifying results (she added the purple specks of what look like blood or something, and colored the nose).Pete Prochilohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11071453177683930557noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-850640863529530550.post-50601117242044934182010-08-07T05:38:00.000-07:002010-08-16T14:53:27.638-07:00Clone WarsMe wife and I watched the awesome flick "Moon" last night. I feel like the "old-school" special effects were more real (to the eye) than the computer stuff they do in most movies, since it lets actual light play off surfaces in genuine 3-D (the eye knows when it's being duped, more often than not). The story was really emotional and awesomely acted--I won't spoil the whole deal for those who haven't seen it, but it brought to mind the storyline I was starting to develop in the late run of Bobu Leene.

Above, one Bobu Leene trades punches with another.

The gist of the Bobu Leene arc was this: in the superhero world, the superhero--or anti-hero, even--has to conceive of himself as a hero on a quest. But given that there are a million and one heroes out there (The Hero with a Thousand Faces, eh), what if this impetus, to think of oneself as a hero, is just narcissism, or, in Bobu Leene's case, replicated memories? If I ever get to doing Bobu Leene #13, I think I will take up these reins again.

The wife and I previously watched Jim Jarmusch's "The Limits of Control," which was also awesome. I love Jarmusch's sense of texture, his use of color, his choice of music, and his pacing and cinematography. His can make even the most seemingly mundane acts portentous.Pete Prochilohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11071453177683930557noreply@blogger.com0
